What to do while you wait for help
- Stay on the line, or call back. Crisis counselors answer 24 hours a day.
- Move away from anything you could use to hurt yourself, if you can do so safely.
- Stay with someone you trust, or ask someone to stay with you.
- Tell someone plainly: "I need help right now." You do not have to explain everything.
- If the situation becomes immediately dangerous, call 911.
If you are worried about someone else
- Ask directly whether they are thinking about suicide. Asking does not increase risk.
- Stay with them, or help them get to a place where they are not alone.
- Call 988 together and let a counselor guide the conversation.
- Call 911 if there is an immediate threat to their safety.
- Read our article on when to seek mental health help.
